Why Ndigbo Should Stop Saying “Na My Village People” – Emeka Maduewesi

The Anambra State born and Former Google Document Review Attorney, Barrister Emeka Maduewesi who lives in San Francisco, United State Of America has come out to condemn and correct the ongoing trend among the youths and Igbos in general on social media against the popular saying “na my village people”.

According to the outspoken Lawyer, The saying has eaten deep into the heart of Igbos to extent of seeing their village people as the cause of their problems and downfall thereby making them to run away from their hometown not minding that the saying was an “import”  from their Neighbors.

“Igbos, beware what you import from your neighbors”

“My younger sister Onyii of blessed memory attended the University of Benin Education Campus at the College of Education Abraka. One thing that intrigued her was the flippancy with which non-Igbos attribute any unpleasant event in their daily lives to their village people. Onyii, like me, grew up and attended primary and secondary schools at Nnewi, our village.

“Few years after my sister’s graduation from Abraka, my wife Iffy attended the same institution, now as Delta State University. She also found the same “na my village people” accusations as source of all problems disturbing.

“One late evening at DELSU Abraka, Iffy stepped on a long snake, fell down in fright, stood up screaming, but was unharmed. The snake was killed. To her, it was an encounter with a snake. To the non-Igbos who witnessed or heard the story, it was her village people.

“These Igbo ladies might have taken this as a joke if not for the fact that the non-Igbos hardly visit their villages. From the campus they will go to Warri, Sapele, Benin, Onitsha, Lagos, or some other town to spend holidays with non-relatives; anywhere but their own village.

“My family lived at Inyaba village, Umudim Nnewi. So, which particular family should I suspect to be responsible for that bird that flew into my Dad’s car and almost caused a crash? The Okongwu’? The Ofomata’s? The Obimdike’s? Maybe the Asomugha? Or even the Etiaba? Oh! My village people! Tha Amazus or the Chukwujekwus! To think that any of these families care for anything that is not the progress and long life of mine is incurable stupidity.

“My wife is from Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka, Anambra State. So, who sent the snake? Maybe the Nkwochas. Or the Nwandus. Or even the FGN Okoyes. Now, these are families who, though living in Enugu or Onitsha, worship in the local village church every Sunday, their children in tow.

“These days I read Igbos on social media mouthing “na my village people” and I consider it worrisome. That was how we imported all forms of idolatry and prostitution from our neighbors.


“The Igbos should have a rethink. Never accept you are same as your neighbors. The Germans and the French are not the same. What may amuse the Italian may annoy the English.

“We have gradually move from Bishop Crowther’s “God in three persons” to Archbishop Idahosa’s casting and binding. While some are yet to really understand Bishop Shanaham!’s Holy Mary, many already joined Bishop Oyedepo in identifying spiritual arrows. Those who were supposed to move Awka blacksmithing into the 21st century have joined those constructing spiritual shields and ramparts in Abuja and Lagos.

“In the next hundred years, “na my village people” will be so ingrained in Igbos that no one will accept is was a learned behavior.

“I love my village people, and I have no doubt they love and wish me well.

“You can be 100% Igbo and love your neighbors without learning their bad behavior for political correctness.”
